FMT's Baseless speculations about the March 8 meeting reek of sensationalism

SYED ALI ALHABSHEE

When it comes to journalism ethics and standards, most share common elements including the principles of public accountability, fairness, objectivity, accuracy and truthfulness.

But contrary of this, Thursday's news report on the online news website, Free Malaysia Today (FMT), titled "Is Najib on his way out or digging his heels in" made sweeping statements and baseless allegations.

The scheduled March 8 meeting between Prime Minister Najib Razak and UMNO division heads seems to have aroused the curiosity of many.

However, I expected responsible journalist to report truthfully and accurately as opposed to fanning hatred and spewing venom aimed at jump-starting cracks within UMNO.

Maybe it's reports like these that make up for juicy stories, which increase circulation or in this case readership. But it certainly reeks of unprofessionalism.

And it's sad to see veteran journalist and even academics jump on the bandwagon, frothing at the mouth, and allude to waning support for Najib.

The premier has been facing a growing number of challenges as he holds the top job in the country. This is not exclusive to Malaysia alone.

But the Sunday meeting is definitely not a huge PR exercise by Najib, aimed at shoring up his dwindling support. To merely jump to conclusions such as these and that too by journalists is being simplistic and reckless.

Jornalists must uphold their athical journalism standards and practises as their reports from public opinion and perceptions. Misreporting facts has serious implications, as these would create speculations that may have adverse consequences on the country.

Yes, we have our own set of challenges, just like everyone else. But we have strong fundamentals and stabile government.

News reports aimed at sensationalism and the much-coveted two-minute fame would only serve to jeopardise the image of the country and government.

I appreciate the need for media workers to do their jobs and get their reports out. But I appeal to you to talk to the right people and report both sides of the stories.

After all, you people claim allegiance to fairness, justice and the truth right?
